My friend Gayathri was here for the weekend. She left while I was at work. When I came home this was set as my computer background. I left a very similar message on her camera. Thanks for the visit, G!

In other news, today I touched base with the professor for whom I'll be grading in the fall. He sent me the book list and I am so excited- Jane Eyre, She Stoops to Conquer, and lots of Oscar Wilde. Woo woo.

the sleepy language of cats

Remember that book "The Secret Language of Sleep"? I've never found the descriptions very accurate but Amelia Bauer's illustrations are so beautiful and I've been thinking about them a lot recently at night, sandwiched between the boyfriend and the cat.

Maybe the reason our language of sleep reads more like the story of Babel is because our equation involves a third, a twelve-pound monster who takes up half the bed. Some nights he sleeps between us, his arms stretched in one direction or the other, forcing us toward our respective sides. Other nights he claims the bottom of the bed, leading us to curl around him and each other. I'm not sure what this means for us, if anything. All I know is that I have a new excuse to study the actions of Monsieur Chaton. I have begun to diagram and classify his most common positions.

Please click on these to make them larger, they are much more attractive that way.

Sometimes I think, did I really spend four hours on that? The answer is always yes.

ceci n'est pas une pipe

Our kitchen sink has leaked since we moved in but yesterday while I was washing the dishes the water started all but pouring out into the pots and pans below. When I knelt down to investigate the situation I found that our pipe was leaking because there was no pipe in one spot, just a roll of electrical tape. This added to our existing frustration with our landlord- for months they have ignored the fact that we don't have anything but (scalding) hot water in our shower. A few weeks ago they broke the silence, sending us a letter notifying us that our hot water cost has gone up and that we are responsible for the difference.

As I applied another roll of tape to the underbellies of our sink, Max sat quietly at his computer, typing. After a few minutes he read me the scathing email he had written. He pressed send. We returned to the dishes, victoriously.

Like most victories, it was brief.

Yahool.

Speaking of Victory Briefs, Max knows the brother and sister who won this season of The Amazing Race! I've never seen it before so we're watching episode 1 right now.

I've been trying to embed Modest Mouse's Greedy Cocker Spaniels here but I can't figure it out. :[ Haaalp?

I must really like my feet because this video was taken almost a year before that picture above. Those aren't even the same pants, although you'd never be able to tell.

After noticing the similarities between those two pieces of media I started going through my phone to see if I could find more of the same. There is a definite pattern here.
